It is with an extremely heavy heart that I have decided to try to find a loving new home for my 8-month old Mudi puppy, Squid (Hungarian sheepdog). Before contacting me please read this ad carefully and take time to consider if he will be a good fit for you, and if you will be a good fit for him. I would strongly advise that only those experienced with high drive and/or reactive dogs consider adopting Squid.
We love Squid and the decision to re-home him is an incredibly difficult one. Ultimately, Squid and I are just not compatible with each other, to the point that I’m unable to provide him with the life and environment he needs and deserves. Squid has a big personality with challenging behaviours (described below) that I’m simply not equipped to handle, however I believe there is someone out there who can help him live his best life. Mudis require a ton of work, however the work will be greatly rewarded with an exceptional dog.
Squid is a relatively small dog (10 kg) however he is very strong and fierce. Squid has extremely high drive, high energy, and requires a lot of physical and mental stimulation. These qualities make Mudis like Squid excel in agility sports. He is healthy overall, and is up to date on vaccinations and deworming. He is microchipped and neutered.
He is an amazing dog, but comes with some huge challenges that will take a lot of patience, time, work, and consistent training to overcome. He is very reactive to other dogs, as well as cars, bicycles, skateboarders, joggers, etc. When he reacts to these stimuli he has leash aggression and will redirect his frustration by lunging, barking, and sometimes spinning around and biting - usually at my legs (redirection aggression).
Squid LOVES people and is not generally aggressive towards humans, however if he is held back by a leash or a barrier he will become very frustrated when trying to go greet people and will bark aggressively at them. He has a tendency to guard when a new person enters our home, so some extra caution must be taken in that situation. However, when he does get over his initial excitement, he gives guests and strangers a ton of happy love and affection - he just likes to bark about it at first.
Squid has played with some dogs very well, but has also been pushy and aggressive with others, so a home without other dogs (or cats) would be best. Because of his redirection aggression, I would strongly advise against an environment with children.
Squid is trained to sleep in his crate at night however he has anxiety when he is crated when we are not at home, but he is slowly showing improvement.
Otherwise, Squid is an extraordinary dog. He is very intelligent and learns obedience tasks very quickly. He is a lot of fun to play with, and can be very goofy. He is fun to take on hikes (in areas where there are no major stimuli and he can sniff and prance around happily). Despite his energy, he is very calm in the house. I’m able to work a 9-5 job from home without much distraction from him as long as he gets regular pee and play breaks. He is incredibly cute, and he will melt your heart.
Squid would do well living somewhere that has a large fenced area where he can run freely within an enclosure (his recall is not great so I wouldn’t advise letting him off leash outside of an enclosure until he is properly trained). In our current living situation our neighbours have dogs on all sides of our fence, and I would not recommend a similar situation as it makes playing and training outside difficult due to distraction.
I am going to be extremely selective about choosing a potential new home for Squid. I want to set him up for success with the right people, and the right environment. If you think you can provide a good home and a wonderful life for this challenging but extraordinary puppy, please contact me.
